Topo Designs Subalpine Hip Pack Review
Words and photos by Dave Malwitz
Recently I’ve found hip packs to be extremely useful for supplementing storage on a range of rides, of the off-road variety. Like handlebar bags and frame bags, hip packs are great option when going gravel casual. Leaving the cycling jersey behind has never been easier as you won’t miss the back pocket storage when slinging one of these around your waist. But not all hip packs are created equal - as there’s a delicate balance between extra functionality and a minimal, lightweight design that’s suitable for cycling.
We picked up the all-new Subalpine Hip Pack to give it a try, a promising looking bag from Topo Designs with its unmistakable patterns the brand is known for. Loaded with extra straps, attachment points and cords not seen on most small hip packs available today, these added features came across as somewhat unnecessary at first. However, I began to use the bag I found each element to be well placed and surprisingly convenient on everything from short to long rides.
The Subalpine Hip Pack has a 2.4 L capacity, which I found to be plenty of space for a few snacks, tools and phone. The materials on my black/white ripstop colorway version are plenty durable, although the bag is not waterproof. The slim inner accessory pocket is great for packing our lightweight phone wallet, and the bright yellow cloth liner makes finding items easy. Probably my favorite feature, and one I didn’t think much of at first, is the external shock cord bungee. It’s a nice touch that adds minimal weight for the flexible storage it offers. To demonstrate, below I attached the Topo Ultralight Jacket which fits securely with a quick cinch. Another nice feature is the soft ridged back panel for breathability, as well as the two compression straps underneath for achieving a low profile fit.
Our Favorite Features
Two pockets easily accessible from the pack’s top edge
Exterior shock cord bungee to add a lightweight jacket or vest
Adjustable compression straps for low profile fit
Comfortable RidgeBack panel provides comfort and airflow
Durable waist strap and buckle hardware
Great size, weight and capacity for riding
Overall the Subalpine Hip Pack is a great bag for any cyclist looking to diversify their existing storage options, and one you will almost certainly find useful for off-the-bike adventures as well. The bag costs $59 and is available in 5 colorways including Blue, Red, Forest Green, Ballistic Black, and Black/White Ripstop. If you’re hip pack curious, definitely give the Subalpine a try!
