Win Wing 2 First Look
It was just last year that Ass Savers upped their game with a whole new way to keep spray at bay with the Win Wing Fender System. We loved the original Win Wing for its affordability, lightweight design, and undeniable performance. Today Ass Savers introduces an updated version of their most recent mudguard, aptly named the Win Wing 2. Here are my first impressions after testing the Win Wing 2 Gravel ahead of its launch.
Key Updates
According to Ass Savers, they have updated the Win Wing in three key ways to make it stronger, gentler, and darker. Upon unboxing the Win Wing 2, I immediately noticed the wishbone frame’s updated appearance and more robust feel. Although the original tan color of the Win Wing never bothered me, I’m sure the new all-black appearance will be a welcome change for some riders. I will say however that dust and dirt are more noticeable against the black material (as can be seen in the photo above). The wishbone frame is noticeably stronger than version 1, which should help to keep flexing down at higher speeds, or over rough terrain. As for being gentler, this refers to each Win Wing 2 coming with a set of clear polyurethane frame saving stickers to eliminate any potential for unwanted frame rum. It’s a nice touch, although I wasn’t too worried about frame rub on my Revel R+ titanium frame. Ass Savers tells us that the new black wishbone frame will ship as standard with all Win Wing 2 orders moving forward, and a matching all-black mudguard combo named the Wing Wing Stealth will be available only wile supplies last.
How To Install the Win Wing
As described in our original Win Wing review, there are a few key steps that must be taken to ensure optimal performance when installing the Ass Savers Win Wing 2.
FOLD. The biggest mistake I see people make when installing an Ass Saver is not folder the creases enough before install. You must fold hard on the fender’s creases to meet its designed rigidity, as not doing so will result in a floppy and underperforming mudguard.
PLACE. The next step to install the Win Wing is to attach the wishbone frame as close as possible to the rear tire. I found that loosely fitting the frame around the seat stays, adjusting its position about 5mm above the tread, then tightening the straps, was a foolproof method for a proper fit.
POP. The last step is attaching the blade, which easily pops into two buttons on either side of the frame, and then sits at an angle that is adjustable depending on which of the three top holes are used. According to Ass Savers, the angle of the blade should rise slightly from tip to tail.
PRICING AND AVAILABILITY
Just like its predecessor, the Win Wing 2 is available in two sizes, the 64-gram Road with clearance for up to 35mm tires and the 72-gram Gravel with clearance for up to 60mm. The new Win Wing 2 Gravel in both Stealth and standard designs is available from Nov 9, 2023 throught the Ass Savers website and other dealers worldwide.
